MTI 2023 Coffee Shop Foodservice Outlook

Written by Danielle Fantasia | Jan 20, 2023 2:30:00 PM

As we look back at 2022 we can’t help but to think about the popularity of coffee shops and how they only seem to be gaining steam (no pun intended) with each new year. Consumer trends tend to play a large role in the growth of coffee shops, including foodservice trends. At MTI we make it a point to stay on top of evolving foodservice trends, and what we think the future has in store.

Check out some of our predictions that we are most excited to see in 2023!

Preordering Stays Strong

One thing that most likely will not be changing in 2023 is the need for convenient, on-the-go food options. Ordering ahead isn’t a new concept, but it has significantly increased since the pandemic shook things up in 2020. Owners and operators should consider investing in technology and/or equipment that can help improve their preorder process.

Tourist Destinations

Lately, coffee shops are way more than just a refueling station, they are tourist destinations. This is especially true for small, independently owned establishments. When exploring a new city, visitors are looking for a taste of the local food scene, and try to avoid commercialized chains that can be found all over the world. We predict that 2023 will be THE year for local coffee spots to showcase their foodservice offerings!

Plant-Based Proteins

You may have thought that the consumption of plant-based proteins was a temporary fad. One that was only going to be around for a year or so, but you’d be wrong. According to the 2022 Plant-based Meat Market Report from Research and Markets, (the world's largest market and research store) the global plant-based meat market analysis is envisioned to garner $33,249.7 million by 2031, growing from $5,263.2 million in 2021. Which means there has never been a better time to start reimaging your menu!

Labor Solutions

Hiring challenges will continue to plague businesses in 2023, but the way owners choose to respond to these challenges will be a bit different. While some may be choosing to focus on hiring incentives, others are looking to technology to fill the labor gaps. Innovative kitchen equipment is proving to be a quick and easy fix for these ongoing staffing struggles. Automatic deep fryers and highspeed ovens do the hard work for you, allowing operations to continue with a limited number of employees.
