The islands of Hawaii hold so much beauty and history. There are breathtaking mountain views, white sand beaches, and an amazingly rich culture that is expressed through their music, dance, and delicious food. Here at MTI, we have taken a particular interest in that delicious food part. So, we decided to take a deep dive into a classic island favorite that is quickly becoming a tasty trend throughout the US, Mochiko Chicken!
What is Mochiko Chicken?
This salty yet sweet delight is named for the flour that gives it it’s unbelievably crunchy exterior. Mochiko rice flour is made from a glutinous rice that originated from Asia, which develops a light and crispy texture when fried. This Mochiko rice flour is combined with soy sauce, sugar, garlic, green onion, and cornstarch to make a thick batter. Looking for a little heat? Some add Gochujang, a red chili paste that is commonly used in Japan, highlighting the Japanese influences on Hawaiian cooking.
How Do You Eat Mochiko Chicken?
This mouthwatering treat can be enjoyed many different ways. The chicken can be cut up into smaller, bite sized portions and eaten as a snack, or served over rice. Larger servings like a boneless thigh or breast can be served on a bun, making it a handheld favorite for anyone and everyone.
Where Can I Find Mochiko Chicken?
Other than the islands of Hawaii, Mochiko Chicken can now be found in other areas across the United States. As its popularity continues to grow on the mainland, we can certainly expect this tasty trend to pop up in more and more areas.
