Fresh cut French fries are truly something special. There is a labor of love that goes into making them and most find themselves completely hooked after just one bite. At the home of the AutoFry we are no strangers to the coveted fry and love serving them up in our test kitchen whenever the opportunity presents itself.
Now, we know we aren’t the only ones who feel passionately about their deep-fried potatoes, so we decided to put together a list of some of our best tips and tricks for fresh cut fries. Check them out below and give them a try the next time you’re thinking about whipping up a batch!
- Wash the potatoes: No one wants dirty fries.
- Peel the potatoes: This one is optional depending on your preferences. To be honest we love them both ways.
- Cut the potatoes to you desired size: You can use a fry cutter for consistency, or cut them by hand and give each fry its own personality.
- Soak the potatoes: Soak the spuds for anywhere from 3 to 24 hours in a mixture consisting of 1 tablespoon of vinegar and a gallon of water. This will remove the excess starch and help make them extra crispy!
- Dry the potatoes: Drying your cut fries will help eliminate any splatter that may occur when the excess water comes into contact with the hot oil.
- Prepare in the AutoFry: Fresh fries that are 1/8 inch –1/4 inch thick can be cooked in the AutoFry with ease in about 5 minutes. Larger cuts like 3/8 or 1/2 inches will take around 6 minutes.
- Season the fries: Hit them while they are hot! Hot oil will help your seasoning(s) adhere to the outside of the fries. Don’t be afraid to top them with more than salt!
